An unidentified Lincolnshire County Councillor has been threatened with blackmail.
The member has received at least three letters in recent weeks saying friends, colleagues, and family members of the councillor, plus the media, will be told they are a paedophile if they don’t pay £10,000.
Lincolnshire Police is working with Lincolnshire County Council Trading Standards in investigating the complaint. They believe the councillor may have been contacted through details placed on the council’s website.
Supt Mark Housely, county officer for public protection, said similar letters have been sent around the Thames Valley. Anyone receiving such letters should avoid touching it and should contact police so it can be examined by forensics.
“Don’t respond to these malicious letters or transfer any funds out of fear. As they request payment via bitcoins, a cyber-currency, you would be unlikely to see this money again as it is difficult to trace,” he said.
