The first veterans’ breakfast club at Market Rasen Social Club was a great success.
“The effort Eve and Shaun have put in for us is fantastic,” said Michael Kenning, who organised the event along with fellow veteran Martin Hare.
“We couldn’t have wished for anything better; it is everything we wanted it to be.”
Former service personnel of all ages came from a wide area to the event to enjoy some good food and, more importantly, time with like-minded people.
Also at the breakfast was town mayor John Matthews and Del Hardman, who started the first veterans’ breakfast club, Barkers in Hull.
“This is a great turnout for the first session - any club would be proud of this,” he said.
Del admits he started the original breakfast club for ‘purely selfish’ reasons.
“I missed the banter,” said Del.
“I am the only ex-forces person in my office and they sometimes don’t get me, so I set up the club to get together with people who do.
“You might not know the people, but as soon as you sit down and start talking together there is a bond because you have both had similar experiences and understand what is being said.
“For me, the club is like a recharging for the week ahead.”
The Market Rasen Veterans Breakfast Club, one of 121 clubs across the UK, will meet in the Social Club in Serpentine Street on the second Saturday of the month.
