Cattle market debate

Councillors will this evening be debating multi-million pound measures to secure the future of Melton’s cattle market.

At tonight’s meeting (Thursday) of Melton Council’s rural, economic and environmental affairs committee, council members will consider directing £2 million towards the regeneration of the cattle market. This is in addition to a bid for £3.5 million ‘growth funding’ submitted to Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership.

The council is also considering setting aside a further £200,000 to enable the project to proceed to full planning.

Committee chairman councillor Joe Orson said: “The council is committed to retaining the livestock market in its existing location and these proposals aim to secure the future of the market and free up land close to the town centre.

“The livestock market is hugely important to the town. It is an anchor for so many small and local businesses and attracts many visitors.

“It is also important for the viability of the town centre that the market remains vibrant. The livestock market has regional significance and its edge-of-town location makes it unique.”

He added: “If the grant application is successful I believe it will bring significant economic gains for the town.

“We have had fantastic support for the project from a wide range of local partners, including the Melton Mowbray Market Partners, Homes and Communities Agency, the Town Estate and Melton Mowbray and District Civic Society.”

The cattle market redevelopment is expected to be completed in two phases.

The first phase will see the existing cattle sheds replaced with new cattle pens and the creation of an area on the southern section of the market for a mix of uses, including food and drink.

Melton Council has long held ambitions to improve the existing seven hectare site. Plans for the re–development and improvements have been in the making for the past 10 years.

The plans aim to secure the future of the livestock market at its present site for at least another 20 years.
