Video: New indoor skatepark at Hemswell

A new business in Hemswell has been keeping sporting youngsters busy over the recent holiday season.

Slabcity - an indoor skatepark - opened on the Hemswell Business Centre at the beginning of April.

It is the brainchild of local joiner Will Deverell, who owns, engineered and designed the skatepark.

“I wanted to do something for the community and the kids - as well as to provide something more interesting in my own life,” said Will.

“My son is in to scootering and there isn’t a lot on offer in this area, so I decided to put all my eggs in one basket and start my own business.”

After building a scale model of the proposed skatepark, Will got some great feedback at last year’s Independence Day event in Lincoln and decided to go ahead, with the help of skater Chris Welsh, who has become Will’s first employee.

And since the skatepark opened, it has attracted BMXers, scooterers and in-line skaters of all ages.

“The guys that have used Slabcity have been really happy,” said Will.

“Not everyone is in to traditional sports and this is a growing industry - and at the end of the day, it is getting people outside and getting some physical exercise.”

And safety is one of the top priorities at Slabcity.

To maximise the enjoyment for all users, Will is looking at developing BMX only and Scooter only evenings.

And Chris will be giving lessons to all ages on how to use the skatepark.

To help youngsters get introduced to the park, there will be sessions on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10am to 12 noon for under 11s, and there are also plans for a separate junior ramp room.
