Brigg Town Council has backed the ‘Save our Steelworks’ appeal.
With many Scunthorpe Steel Workers living in Brigg, Matt Buckley, Unite Workplace and Safety Representative, spoke at the monthly Town Council meeting.
“Last month Tata announced a further loss of 900 jobs at Scunthorpe, this does not include the contract work force, but already we are seeing losses in this area as contracts are renegotiated,” said Mr Buckley.
“In short we need help and support, most important is action. We have support from all sides of the political spectrum, none of our local MPs want to see this area without a vibrant steel industry.
“We need the Government to stand up for the British Steel Industry when it comes to the dumping of inferior quality, under-priced Chinese steel.”
He urged the council, on behalf of its constituents involved directly or indirectly in the Steel Industry, to write to local MPs asking for urgent action now whilst there is still a Steel Industry to fight for.
Council unanimously backed his request.
