A service of thanksgiving for the life of Beatrice Mary Laming was held at All Saints Church, Wragby; the Rev Mark Holden officiated.

Having lived in Wragby for 45 years, Betty, as she was fondly known, passed away at The Laurels Nursing Home.

Betty was born 80 years ago at Cadney, near Brigg. Sadly, she lost her mother when she was only four years old, but grew up in a large family, comprising of sister Ann and her late brothers George, Fred, Don and Reg.

Upon leaving school, she worked for a time at Scholeys in Baumber, moving on to work at Danby’s in Horncastle.

It was at the Horncastle Motorcycle Club that she met Ken Laming and they married at St Mary’s Church in Horncastle in 1953.

Together they made their home in Baumber, where in the early years they had to go outside to get water from the pump. And it was while in Baumber their son Keith and daughter Susan were born.

Keith was delivered by a doctor who arrived at the house on skis because of the very deep snow!

Betty and Ken worked hard to support the family – Ken working on the farm and Betty working as a cook at The Red Lion. Later on, they moved to Wragby and Betty worked as a dinner lady at the Primary School and then as a carer and cook at the care home at Holton-cum-Beckering.

Through all the years, Betty cared deeply for her family and others.

She took her home-made plum bread out to people in Wragby and knitted hats for prem-babies.

Family mourners were: Keith Laming (son); Susan and Peter Scott (daughter and son-in-law); Chris Laming (grandson); Lucy Scott and Amy Scott (granddaughters).
