A 68-year-old cycling enthusiast has completed a gruelling 100-mile route from London to Surrey Hills and back in aid of Lindsey Lodge Hospice and the NSPCC.
Don Hare, a retired engineer, proudly finished the ‘Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100’ an hour earlier than he anticipated and has raised more than £800 so far.
He was amongst 25,000 other cyclists as it followed the London 2012 Olympic route.
“I was aiming to complete the ride in 7.5 hours, so I was amazed when I finished it in just over six hours,” said Don from Scunthorpe.
“The atmosphere was amazing with the crowds cheering you on and at times all you could see in front of you were heads of cyclists.
“It was tough though - especially uphill - but I was on a real high when I went over the finish line.”
Don was encouraged to enter through the ballot system by his son, Tim, who lives in London, but his son didn’t get in.
“The camaraderie was tremendous and I ended up making quite a few friends along the way and was kept company by fellow cyclists, some for over 20 miles,” added Don.
Don’s training during the last few months helped to keep him going too.
He gradually built up the miles every week, 1,250 in total.
“I have been a keen cyclist for quite a long time and since retirement I have had more time to get out on my bike and put the miles in,” Don said.
“I have been amazed at how generous people have been in supporting me and I would like to thank them.
“I was aiming to raise £600, which would be split between both charities, but at present the total amount stands over £800.
“But it would be great if I could reach £1,000.
“The hospice is such an admirable cause which deserves to be supported, as does the NSPCC too.”
The money raised by Don’s efforts will help Lindsey Lodge Hospice provide vital care and support for many people in North Lincolnshire, whether they are hospice patients or loved ones, and it will help the NSPCC run projects and services for children and families across North Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire.
