MARKET Rasen pulled out all the stops to celebrate the Queen’s coronation.
The smiling faces in these pictures, which featured on the front page of the Rasen Mail, show what a great time was had by all – despite the rain.
These extracts from the Mail of the day give an idea of the sense of occasion.
“At Market Rasen, bunting and flags flew from every vantage point from the tower of the parish church high up above the golden cockatrice and from buildings like the town hall and the corn exchange as well as in the side streets where nearly every house had its Union Jacks.
“Rasen has never perhaps been so lavishly decorated before in its history. VE Day, the previous highlight, was completely eclipsed.
“The clock over the town hall, which commemorates Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, is being lit up at night with red, white and blue bulbs and trawler searchlights are being employed for the floodlighting of the tower of the parish church.”
