Institute ladies are getting arty

MEMBERS of Binbrook WI were given the chance to try their hand at folk art painting at their June meeting.

Debbie Sutton gave an informative talk about several of the world’s most well-known folk art traditions, including the British tradition of canal boat painting.

This simple way of painting a flower using a series of commas can be traced back to medieval times across the European continent.

Most of the ladies had a go at producing a gift card, which they painted with three small flowers, and, despite initial cries of ‘I can’t paint’, everybody went home happy with their artistic creations.

The competition for something you have made saw Marion Rippin take first place, with Joan Lamb second and Hilary Harris third.

Flower of the month was won by Hilary Harris, with Marion Rippin second, Barbara Powland third and Joan Lamb fourth.

The next meeting of the WI will be on Wednesday, July 6 in the Reading Room at 7pm, when there will be a talk with slides on walks in the Lincolnshire Wolds with Pete Skipworth.

The competition is for a piece of Lincolnshire memorabilia and visitors will be very welcome; admission costs £3.
