Rasen sheep farmer Arthur Chantry entered the winners’ enclosure at the town’s racecourse for the very first time in 1986.

Racecourse officials marked ‘Chant’s’ 60-year support of the local track by naming a race in his honour and ‘Babslad’, trained by Gill Morgan of South Somercotes, was the first winner of the Arthur Chantry Novice Hurdle.

Mr Chantry, who was also celebrating his 83rd birthday, had missed only a handful of Rasen meetings and could even remember supporting the jumpers when the course was in Caistor Road.
