Another week, another Nurburgring record.

With the arrival of the next-generation Civic Type R fast approaching Honda has announced that the model has set a new lap record around the infamous Green Hell of the Nordschleife.

In what is become a seemingly endless to-and-fro battle, the new Type R set a lap time of 7 minutes 43.8 seconds, eclipsing the previous record for a front-wheel-drive production car by nearly six seconds. That 7 minutes 49.21 seconds times was set by the VW Golf GTI Clubsport S just last October and it knocked a second and a half off the previous record, set by… the Honda Civic Type R.

According to Honda, the lap time was achieved during the final phase of the model’s testing regime, “on a dry track with an optimum ambient temperature for the best tyre and powertrain performance”.

The Japanese manufacturer says that the new model has managed to shave nearly seven and a half seconds over the outgoing one thanks to raft of updates.

Not least among these is the tinkering to the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, which now puts out 316bhp and 295lb/ft. The car also features a longer wheelbase and wider track than before and features new multi-link suspension to offer better stability and cut body roll. It’s also been on a diet, shedding 16kg and has seen torsional stiffness increase 38 per cent.

What may also have helped were the “track-focused” road legal tyres and the removal of the rear seats and infotainment system, although Honda insists this was simply to compensate for the added weight of the test car’s full floating roll cage.

Either way, it’s an impressive time but don’t expect VW or any of the other hot hatch battlers take this lying down.
