Crazy big, crazy fast: Mini does it again
Just when you thought that Mini must surely have run out of new versions to produce, up they pop at the Paris motor show with this, the Mini Clubman JCW.
As we know, the Clubman is one of the big beasts in the Mini range, and as we also know JCW stands for John Cooper Works, the name traditionally adorning the fastest Minis. So what we have here is a big, fast Mini.
With 228bhp from its tweaked turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine – 39bhp more than the next most powerful Clubman – and a significant extra wedge of torque to boot, the numbers are 6.3 seconds for the 0-62mph dash plus a top speed of 148mph. Try telling your dad that a Mini estate is doing these sorts of speeds and he’ll most likely laugh, or possibly cry, into his tea.
Audi’s S3 Sportback is quicker to 62mph at 5.3sec, but the regular A3 Sportback 2.0 TFSI Sport takes longer than the Mini at 6.9sec. Both Audis beat it on top end, but does an extra 3mph or even 7mph really matter at these speeds? Probably not.
These two Audis are useful price comparators too, bookending the Clubman JCW which will stand you in at £29,345 (manual) or £30,945 (eight-speed auto).
The good thing about the Clubman JCW is that it gets Mini’s All4 four-wheel drive system along with better suspension, braking, cooling and exhaust systems. New body bits (including a rear wing) are said to boost aerodynamics. The 18in wheels you see are exclusive to the Clubman JCW. Inside there are sports seats and a swish Alcantara headliner.
You can imagine it looking quite boss in a more subdued colour scheme than the Paris show car. If it floats your boat you should be able to pick one up in the UK by December.
