A fascinating talk on all things fruity was given by Shaun Darcy, of Manby, who started grafting fruit trees in his back garden as a hobby.

He now grafts 2,000 trees a year on to root stocks which will determine characteristics such as height, vigour and fruit bearing age.

With 2,500 apple varieties and 500 cookers in the UK, he explained how to choose and care for apples that could taste of pineapple, aniseed, vanilla, nuts and more.

Members showed particular interest in the Charles Ross apple, which is often successful at village shows.

The next meeting will be on Monday, April 11, at 7pm, when Sally Grant will speak on The History of the National Garden Scheme. Visitors welcome.
