Join in the Big Friendly Read

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of favourite children’s author Roald Dahl, this year’s challenge is called ‘The Big Friendly Read’.

To encourage children to take part, members of the Market Rasen Library team have been visiting local primary schools to tell them all about the Big Friendly Read.

The children at Legsby School have been looking at the work of Roald Dahl over the past few weeks and a display of their work and pictures will be in the library.

The Big Friendly Read was launched at the weekend and will run right through the summer holidays.

“Children always have lots planned for the summer, but we want to encourage them to also think about picking up a book and reading,” said Mel Fenwick from Market Rasen Library.

The challenge is free to take part in, just go along to any library to register and pick up a collector folder.

Then, all you have to do is take out and read at least six books over the summer holidays.

“The books can be anything you want, not just books by Roald Dahl,” added Mel.

“They could be fiction or factual books, with little or loads of words - it is entirely up to you.”

Along the way, each reader will be given collector cards that make up a set to complete their folder.

Each card features an original piece of Quentin Blake artwork from a classic Roald Dahl tale.

There are also gifts to be collected along the way - bookmarks, key rings and wrist bands.

The library has also organised some activities to take part in along the way.

Every Friday throughout the Big Friendly Read, starting this week, July 22, Market Rasen Library will be holding a Juice and Jabber.

Go along between 3pm and 4pm to choose books and discuss what you have read, while enjoying juice and biscuits, provided by Tesco Community Champion Jenny Stimson.

Another free event is the Fantastic Mr Fox session in the library on Friday August 12.

Go along between 2pm and 3.30pm to have a go at creating an origami fox.

Market Rasen Library has also teamed up with the Society of Lincolnshire History and Archaeology to take a step back into the Ice Age.

Kathy Holland will be returning to the library on Friday July 29 for a craft activity session from 10am to 12 noon.

Admission is free, but there is a charge of £1 for each activity.
