The day was led by tutor Jonathan Willcocks, the son of the famous British choral conductor Sir David Willcocks, who died last year.

The focus for the day was on two very different contemporary compositions – John Rutter’s Requiem and Jonathan’s own composition A Great and Glorious Victory, written to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) – one melodic and reflective, the other descriptive and dramatic.

“It was good to welcome singers from the neighbouring choirs of Grimsby, Horncastle, Louth and Lincoln, and share in a voyage of discovery, thinking about the ideas that lie behind the actual notes and exploring the way we can make them the most important part of a performance,” said society member Thea Hogg.

Both pieces are soon to be performed locally.

Requiem will be included in the programme for the society’s concert on May 21 in De Aston Sports Hall and A Great and Glorious Victory by Grimsby Philharmonic Society, at the Central Hall, Grimsby, this Saturday, April 23,
