Welsh take the loot from Rasen races
WELSH raiders who clocked up the miles for Friday's card at Market Rasen were well rewarded with three wins.
Claiming the feature race, a handicap hurdle, was Vale of Glamorgan trainer Evan Williams as Mickmacmagoole with amateur rider Mr J.E. Tudor on board showed his rivals a clean pair of heels.
The horse was well backed but went to post at 13-2. His two length win came at the expense of the Richard Johnson ridden Hipperdrome (9-1).
Johnson, so often the runner up in the jockey's championship, had also looked like winning the previous race, a handicap hurdle when he climbed over the final obstacle up top of Maria Antonia - more or less neck and neck with Benmadigan. The latter had Fearghal Davis up and it was the Noel Richards trained seven year old who managed to find extra on the run in to get up on the line.
Punters were rewarded at 3-1 having sent off Johnson's mount at 7-4. Richard Johnson finally got his winner on board Runaround Sue, trained by Mrs. A.M. King at Bronwydd Arms, in the sixth race.
Favourite backers had a dreadful afternoon, with two who went to post odds on floundering. Calaficial, trained by Alan King and with Robert Thornton up, lost the seller to get the afternoon underway; Sagarich landing the prize for Mick Quinian and jockey Jamie Moore.
The winner was having his first start over hurdles and had only managed one win on the flat in Ireland from 15 starts.
The second race, the Rum and Rasen Claiming Hurdle, saw another favourite beaten. This time Muntami with Liam Tredwell up overturned the expectations for 4-6 favourite Heir to Be.
Scamblesby trainer Steve Gollings saddled Spingfield Raki in the fifth race and the horse was backed down well. Despite being up with the leaders on the first circuit the five year old was never travelling from then on and had to be pulled up by Jockey Rhys Flint before the final straight.
Pokanoket had won well at this course last time out under James Halliday but could not match the finishing speed of Mr Robert, which is now also in the Evan Williams yard, and the change of scenery to the Welsh mountains could clearly work wonders in putting the eight year old's carear back on track.
