Speedway - Scorpions straight to serious stuff

The Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions open their sixth season on Friday night (19th March at 7.30pm) with a mouth-watering Premier Trophy clash against their local rivals, the Sheffield Tigers, at the Eddie Wright Raceway with Promoter Rob Godfrey hoping his side can continue where they left off at the end of last season.

"We finished the season strongly and but for injuries to Viktor (Bergstrm) and David (Howe) I'm sure we would have won the Young Shield. They have now proven their fitness so hopefully we can start 2010 by putting one over our nearest and dearest from Sheffield".

"They have three former Scorpions in their line-up in Richard Hall, Josh Auty and Paul Cooper and with Ricky Ashworth and Josef Franc leading the side they should be treated with great respect. We have to remember how well they went around our place in 2008 and, in fairness, they were better than the scoreline suggested in last year's Sky TV meeting (Scorpions won 57-38)".

"It really is a great way to start the season and I'm sure if we hadn't been drawn together in the Premier Trophy then we'd probably have had a challenge match against them. It is pressure from the off because it is straight to the serious stuff and we really want to qualify for the semi-finals. To win the group you can really only afford to drop a maximum of one point at home and also need to pick up quite a few in the four away meetings".

"Unlike last year when there were twelve group meetings there is now only eight. We also face Birmingham, Stoke and Redcar and you can't afford any slip ups so hopefully we will hit the ground running. With Joel Parsons joining the team the top five should all be performing like heat-leaders on our own track whilst Jerran Hart and Simon Lambert can also reach that level at times. Their consistency will improve this year and I have complete faith in the team we have put together. However, it will be good to get Friday out of the way and hopefully bag all three points".

Line-ups for Friday's meeting (British unless stated):

'Henderson Insurance' Scunthorpe Scorpions:

1. David Howe, 2. Viktor Bergstrm (Sweden), 3. Joel Parsons (Australia), 4. Magnus Karlsson (Sweden), 5. Carl Wilkinson, 6. Jerran Hart, 7. Simon Lambert

1. Ricky Ashworth, 2. Hugh Skidmore (Australia), 3. Richard Hall, 4. Josh Auty, 5. Josef Franc (Czech Republic), 6. Paul Cooper, 7. Arlo Bugeja (Australia).
