Rasen drop into relegation fight

Injuries and unavailability forced Rasen into making six changes and the side found it difficult to get going against a determined, young Kettering.

Early pressure from the hosts yielded two penalty chances with fullback Joe Daniel nailing the second to give his team the lead after seven minutes.

Kettering continued to maintain their territorial dominance, but resolute Rasen defending kept them at bay and restricted Daniel to only one further missed penalty opportunity.

The red and greens
slowly made their way up field before a quick tap penalty from
debutant scrumhalf Jack
Noquet forced Kettering to
concede a further penalty for not retreating ten metres.

This brought the kick within Matt Sutton’s range, but unfortunately he couldn’t take the chance.

However Rasen looked to be coming back into the game before a hurried drop goal attempt from Sutton fell wide and short of the mark, allowing Kettering to clear. Rasen came back, but powerful Kettering counter rucking produced turnover ball and working the blindside the dangerous Daniel scored with a chip and chase.

Any thoughts of an early red and green comeback were dashed in the fourth minute of the second half as the young Kettering scrumhalf Ryan Conyard slipped up the blindside to score in the corner quickly followed by a superb touchline conversion from Daniel.

Despite this early set back Rasen continued to battle away to earn Sutton another penalty opportunity, but again he was unable to take the points. Five minutes later Noquet cleverly delayed his pass for winger Nick Harvey to pick a sublime line and slice through the home defence to score under the posts. Sutton slotted the kick.

Kettering were soon back on the attack as Rasen conceded another five metre scrum after holding up a sniping Conyard.

This time Kettering made no mistake as number eight Rory Keir picked up and bulldozed his way over the line. Daniel added the conversion and the home ranks thoughts turned to a fourth try and the bonus point, but with only one minute remaining there wasn’t time.
