POOL: The George back on top as Click’em falter
The biggest game of this week’s fixtures was a clash between two challengers for this year’s title.
The Hope Tavern travelled to Swinhope to tackle a Click’em A side previously unbeaten in all competitions this season, while also boasting an impressive unbeaten away record that stretches back over six months.
Something had to give and it was Click’em who will be licking their wounds after going down 6-3 to a side inspired by Tony Fenton’s two sublime finishes.
Lewis Flint offered some damage control as he was involved in two of his sides three successes, which included a quite incredible black in the doubles with Mike Harrington.
Victory for the Hope by a three frame margin keeps them in the title picture four points adrift of top spot and two shy of second.
The reason for the gap could be put down to an off night in a rearranged fixture versus bottom of the table Market Rasen Social Club.
The Hope came away winning 6-3, amazingly beating the bottom and top of the league by the same scoreline within 24 hours.
Up next in the league they are facing leaders The George Inn for the second time in as many weeks.
So The George go back top of the league courtesy of the Click’em A’s defeat and their own comfortable 7-2 success over the Click’em B.
The Rasen side were never troubled and will be pleased to nail themselves back to top spot after a short absence.
There were good performances all round, although it was reputed that Bertie Baxter was back to his swashbuckling best as he claimed both his frames with the clinical finishing prowess that has been lacking from one of the giants of the league in recent weeks.
This result was not what the Click’em B had been hoping for as they are now only two points above the relegation zone with The Plough having a game in hand.
Elsewhere, The Market Rasen Social Club won in a closely fought encounter against Lightning A 5-4, the team’s first win of the season.
The final game of the week was an encounter that could have seen The Crown Inn taken lightly by The Aston B, seven points clear of the drop and nine behind third, meaning that with each game that passes there is an increasing insignificance in terms of the league table for the team.
The Crown on the other hand are fighting to keep their heads above water, only two points clear of the relegation zone and now level with the Click’em B after this 7-2 loss to the Aston B.
The bye for the week went to The Plough Inn. Although next week we have the cup round there will be no drop in the intensity level when the league returns.
The results in this week’s second division matches ensured that the status quo was maintained in terms of league positions, although things are much tighter in terms of points between a number of the teams.
The Butchers Nook closed the gap between the top two teams after registering an 8-1 victory at the Lightning B.
This week’s game was important for the Butchers as they could not afford to fall further behind the Bottle and Glass.
The Lightning B captain will be worried, the side finds itself four or five points adrift of the three teams above having played at least one game more than all of them.
The Bottle and Glass are looking over their shoulder, despite a comfortable 6-3 victory this week, the gap is down to four points after they were victorious by two frames less than the Butchers Nook.
Next, the Bottle travel to The Butchers in a match that could decide the fate of the league.
The final game of the week was a tight affair between two closely matched sides. The Market Rasen Cricket Club and The Aston A fought out a match that went in the direction of the MRCC by a squeak.
The 5-4 scoreline leaves the teams level with The Aston having a game in hand.
All second division teams have the next week off as the cup round last eight is played out with all teams from this division being eliminated in earlier rounds.
The draw for the next round is as follows:
The Crown Inn v The Click’em B
The Hope Tavern v The Lighting Bar A
The Click’em A v The Aston Arms B
The Market Rasen Social Club v The George Inn
