A MARKET Rasen woman has been hurled into the spotlight of the international dart scene – without throwing a single arrow.

Julie Lambie, of Coronation Road, spearheaded the successful campaign to get this year’s Ladies World Professional Championships aired live on television.

While the men’s matches were being shown, plans to show the ladies’ matches were non-existent and the best that could be done was keeping up to date with the scores on a computer link.

County darts player and Lincolnshire county darts secretary Julie teamed up with Sussex darts player Luci Cunningham to launch an online petition and the pair say they were “blown away” by the response.

“It went bonkers,” said Julie.

“Within the first 24 hours, we had 1,000 signatures and some massive darts players got on board too.

“And when the likes of John Lowe show their support and tells everyone to ‘get behind these girls’ you know things are going well.”

And go well they did – with the finals being shown live on the BBC Red Button.

“We achieved something we didn’t think we were going to,” added Julie.

“But we are not going to stop there.

“We will continue to push for ladies darts to be screened on mainstream television.

“The ladies work just as hard as the men to qualify for the top championships.

“They have earned the right to be shown live on tv and the tv channels should give them the respect they deserve – so watch this space.”

As a thank you for all their hard work Julie and Luci were able to watch the finals truly live, as they were invited to Lakeside as guests of top English darts player Deta Hedman, who after a close-run match finished as runner-up.
