Gina sets a GB target

TEALBY-BASED event rider Gina Ruck laid the foundations for a successful 2012 by taking part in a recent British Equestrian Federation (BEF) England Excel Talent Programme performance camp.

Gina, 19, whose long-term aim is to represent Great Britain at senior championship level, was put through her paces by two top-class trainers – List 2 Dressage Judge Andrew Fletcher and former international event rider Fred Bergendorff – at Vale View Equestrian Centre in Leicestershire last month.

Gina is one of 11 talented young event riders nationwide benefiting from inclusion on the BEF England Excel Talent Programme – a new Sport England initiative that aims to identify and nurture potential Olympic riders.

The training camp covered all aspects of riding and competing, plus veterinary care, farriery, rider fitness and nutrition, and sports psychology.

Gina said: “Having different trainers look at us was really beneficial; I went home with a lot of new ideas and training ideas to work on over the winter.

“It was really interesting to learn about how what we eat can affect our performance, and appreciate the role correct shoeing plays in keeping horses fit and well.”

Gina is aiming to represent Great Britain at the Young Rider European Championships in 2012.
