Young rugby players from Market Rasen Rugby Club have run out for a tournament at Welford Road, home of 10-time English champions Leicester Tigers.
Market Rasen Under-10s were among more than 70 teams who took part in this season’s Prima Tiger Cup – the biggest year ever – organised by the Tigers and supported by Prima Solution Ltd of Loughborough.
The event has grown so much in recent years that a Prima Tiger Bowl has been added to give more teams the opportunity to play at Welford Road, following the initial festivals hosted by clubs around the region.
After watching Leicester Tigers victory over Gloucester Rugby, eight teams – from Ashby, Holt, Kettering, Melbourne, Nuneaton, Oadby Wyggestonian and of course Market Rasen - followed in the footsteps of their rugby heroes by playing on Tigers turf in the Prima Tiger Bowl quarter-finals.
The Red and Greens gave a strong performance to reach the semi-finals but were unable to book a place in next month’s final.
They were also joined by Tigers and England international hooker George Chuter for a team photo on the pitch at half-time in the Aviva Premiership win over Gloucester.
Market Rasen coach Paul Cowling said: “It was all we could hope for today, credit to the teamwork on the pitch and how we played.
“It’s been a fantastic day and didn’t imagine getting this far. I’m very proud of everyone and looking forward to playing again next year.”
