A MARKET Rasen mother has become the first person in the UK to become a certified cage fighting referee.

Danielle Curzon, 28, from Willingham Road, has just returned from the USA where she completed the Herb Dean referee course – she says this is one of the world’s best courses for mixed martial arts referees.

She said: “I’m absolutely ecstatic. I really enjoyed myself when I got over there even though it was quite daunting to begin with.

“It was a very challenging course but I wasn’t expecting it to be easy, it needs to be that way.”

Danielle, got involved in cage fighting – a sport that involves all types of martial arts and takes place in a cage – last year but has done other similar sports such as kick boxing since she was 12 years old.

She was recently crowned the Elite Mixed Martial Arts fans’ favourite referee of 2011 after gaining an impressive 42.3 per cent of the votes in an online poll.

Danielle said: “My ambition now is to become the first European female referee in the UFC.”

The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship is the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion company in the world and host most of the sport’s top-ranked fighters.
