Like father, like son at championships

FATHER and son duo Jim and Kieran Gillespie are keeping it in the family when it comes to athletics.

The pair recently returned from the Lincolnshire Championships where they recorded a series of impressive performances.

Keiran set the ball rolling when he won the U13 boys’ javelin with a personal best throw of 13.86 metres. He followed that with another best in the 800 metres, taking 12 seconds off his previous quickest time.

Finally, he finished a highly creditable fifth in the shot putt after another encouraging display.

Not to be outdone, Jim won the discuss and shot putt in the 45-49 year age group.

Jim said: “It was fantastic to win titles on the same weekend as my son. I’ve been involved in athletics for over 35 years so it is great to see Kieran carrying on the family tradition.”

Kieran was representing Queen Elizabeth Grammar School while Jim competed for Lincoln’s Wellington AC.
