GARY Johnson rode to a tenth place finish in round nine of the 2012 Metzeler National Superstock 1000 championship at Brands Hatch on Sunday and retains his 13th place in the overall rider standings.
A crash during the first qualifying session left Johnson, from Broughton near Brigg, well down the field with a lot of work to do in order to secure a strong grid position.
But he recovered well to grab a fourth row place on the starting grid for Sunday’s 15–lap encounter.
As the lights went out Johnson got away to a scorching start and was up to 11th on the opening lap.
He passed Jimmy Storrer on lap five and was looking to move further up field when the safety car was deployed on lap eight of 15.
The car left the track at the end of lap 11 and the race was back on,
Johnson found himself in eighth place with four laps remaining, but was quickly overhauled by Lee Costello and on the final circulation he was overtaken by Patrick Metcalf and crossed the finish line in 10th place.
This result and the six points sees Gary retain his 13th place in the overall rider standings, but its very close and a good result in the next round could see him elevated up the table and into the top 10.
There is a five week break before the next round when Cadwell Park plays host to the British Superbike championship on its usual Bank Holiday date (August 25-27).
Gary will have the advantage of home tarmac both for himself and the Samsung Honda team, which is based just up the road at Louth.
