An innovative way to encourage racehorse owners to run their horses in Market Rasen has won town’s racecourse a national prize.
The ‘Top Spot’ accolade came at the annual 2013 Showcase and Awards, run by the Racecourse Association – the trade body of Britain’s racecourses.
Market Rasen Racecourse, along with its sister course in Nottingham, has been encouraging horse owners to visit over the past season by increasing prizemoney by 25 per cent, offering a complimentary meal and presenting them with baskets of local cheese.
Sarah Friend from Market Rasen Racecourse said: “Ensuring racehorse owners enjoy their visits to the racecourse is really important because it means they will want to run their horses here more often and that leads to better and more competitive sport for all our spectators to watch.”
There’s racing in Market Rasen on two days this month, the next is on Thursday, December 5, followed by Boxing Day, one of the most popular meetings of the year.
This year there will be personal appearances throughout the day by Fireman Sam and Father Christmas will be making an appearance – and there will be free kids lunches and a lucky dip to win valuable prizes.
On-the-day adult prices for December 5: Family Enclosure £7.50 (Boxing Day £12); Tattersalls £14 (£18); County Enclosure £19 (£25). Accompanied under 18s are admitted free of charge.
