A highly controversial penalty stroke towards the end of a tight match with Lincoln Roses was the talking point for Brigg Hockey Club Men’s 1st team as they went down 3-2 at The Pods.
It was a game in which Brigg led the way for much of a hard fought encounter.
Brigg pressed from the start and an Ollie Reid goal put them ahead as he seized upon some poor ball control in the Roses defence. The lead was short lived however with the visitors getting on terms quickly.
Brigg felt badly done to when two claims for penalty strokes were denied by the umpire. Brigg regained their advantage with a well taken goal from Nick Sharp when he seized upon a pass from man of the match Harry Cadwallader.
The score remained 2-1 until the break and it was not until quite late on that the umpire awarded a penalty stroke to Lincoln for an infringement in the Brigg circle that seemed an obvious short corner to the home side and their supporters.
Brigg were stunned to lose their lead when the stroke was converted and Roses made things even worse when they snatched a late winner, seizing upon poor marking in the Brigg defence.
A 3-2 loss seemed hardly fair from a game in which Brigg had much more possession and the better chances.
Brigg Ladies 1st team went down 3-1 to City of York with Libby Eagles scoring in the first half. Like the Men’s 1st team the Ladies 1st team, for whom Eagles was the outstanding player, have some work to do to avoid relegation in the final month of the season.
Their defeat to York came after a 4-0 win against Hull University with goals from Jackie Phillips, Libby Eagles, Jo Parker and Sarah Clapp.
