Brigg 1-2 Skipton
Brigg Hockey Club Ladies 1st team finished their first season in the Yorkshire Ladies League with a 2-1 defeat at home to Skipton.
Brigg started the game well with some great passing and movement from the midfield. At a free hit the ball was played wide left to Sarah Mason who ran the ball to the by-line, put in a reverse stick cross and cool as you like Lois Haigh was there to put the ball into the roof of the net to put Brigg into the lead.
It wasn’t long before Skipton were on the attack and trying their hardest to get back into the game, but the Brigg defence was too strong with hard tackles coming in from all angles by the defence. Skipton got back on terms at a dubiously awarded short corner when the Skipton strike flew into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Brigg knew they had to up their game after half time. They started the second half well again with some great runs on either flank.
A big scare came not long after and Laura Dibdin who was in the Brigg goal was left one on one with a Skipton forward, but she made the right decision and came sliding out to take not just the player but the ball also.
Brigg went again on the attack winning a short corner, which they knew they had to test the opposition with. Katie White made a good injection only for the shot to be saved on the line and the chance go begging.
In the last 10 minutes of the game Brigg tried their hardest to pile pressure on the Skipton defence, but the inevitable happened when the Brigg defence were caught napping on the right side and the Skipton striker sneaked in to notch the winner with only minutes to go.
After a very positive effort in the Yorkshire League Division 1 Brigg can reflect on a very rewarding season and move on to hopefully push for promotion in 2013-14. They look likely to finish in fourth place with 33 points from their 22 games. Jo Parker proved an inspiring captain in her first season in the role.
