Golf: Taylor-made win as Sylvia shines

There has been a busy time of competition at Market Rasen for the Ladies Golf section over the past few weeks.

Sylvia Mowbray played a superb round of golf, playing below her handicap of 13, to win the Taylor Trophy with a nett 71, gross 84 . As a result her handicap has been reduced to 12.

A total of 26 competitors entered the competition and in second place, after a count back, was Gill Kent (21) nett 75 gross 96, with Geraldine Johnson (29) in third on nett 75 gross 104 .

Beautiful sunny conditions, making the course look its best, welcomed the ladies to compete in the annual Professionals prize.

Super scores were returned, with several players playing below their handicap.

The Winner was Mel Gregory (23) with a creditable score of 40 points and there was a count back of the last nine holes to determine the second and third places.

And it was Lynne Patrick (23) who claimed the second place with 39 points, with Jenny Holborn (18) taking third, also with 39 pts.

The Ping Betterball Competiton was cancelled due to the bad weather and will be played at a later date.

The Ladies contested the Wilson Trophy and EWGA medal in June 4, which was won by Sue Archer (22) with a nett score of 74, gross 97.

In second place was Di Warburton (19) nett 76, gross 95, and in third place Barbara Chard (18) nett 78 gross 95.

The best gross score of the day of 91 was returned by Bridget Holmes (12).

The Newstead Trophy played on the following week took the form of a match play competition against the course.

It’s a tough competition as the course never makes a mistake, but 23 ladies rose to the challenge.

And the victor, after a count back, was Di Warburton (19) winning her match against the course two up,

Sharman Scott (24) also beat the course two up and in third place was Helen Grinham (20) who ended up one down after 18 holes.
