The main playing season at Market Rasen Golf Club has begun with two Junior Competitions, two Medals and a Foursomes Medal, with some players showing early season form.

Eleven year old Charlie Elliott has won both Junior Stableford Competitions - Parkinson Plate and Vernam Trophy - come second in the Ford Cup Medal and, with his dad Gaff, finished fifth in the Grouse Shotgun Foursomes.

In the course of one weekend, this most promising player cut his handicap from 23.2 to 16.5.

Men’s captain Graham Dolan, with his partner Dave Garland, took first place in the Grouse Foursomes, narrowly beating last year’s winners, Vic Blanchard and Ian Ribey, by just one shot.

Jeff Portlock, with partner Dave Gregory, recorded the best gross 80 and then went on to win the Spring Medal with a splendid nett 65, reducing his handicap by one shot to 11 and beating Hatrel Dhindsa into second place by a single shot.

Ian Picksley shot a creditable nett 67 off 18 in the Spring Medal and followed this up with a fourth place nett 67 off 17 in the Ford Cup to finish with a new exact handicap of 15.9.

The winner of the Ford Cup was Adam Ramsey, one of the few players to cope with the cold and blustery conditions to card an excellent nett 63 and knock three shots off his handicap.

Gordon Harrison finished 3rd on nett 65 after a back nine countback.

The gross prizes in the Spring Medal and the Ford Cup went to Les Brumpton (g75) and Grant Hinchliffe (g77) respectively.
