High temperatures and thankfully occasional cool breezes provided ideal playing conditions and helped to make a memorable Championship day for the Ladies at Market Rasen and District Golf Club.
Heavy downpours the previous weekend made the fairways lush. 16 lady golfers contested the Harmsworth Trophy, which is presented to the player who returns the best gross score over 36 holes of golf.
It’s a day that many players look forward to, playing 36 holes, which is demanding both physically and mentally - players have to be able to maintain concentration and focus throughout to determine the champion of the year.
This year Bridget Holmes reclaimed her title of Club Champion for the fourth time, a title she first won in 2007. She played a superb round in the morning returning a score of 84 with 1 birdie and 8 pars. In the afternoon she recorded a score of 92, making a winning combined score of 176. In second place was Sue Borthwick with 91+88=179 and third was Jade Baker with 93+89=182.
The winner of the Sergeant Salver presented to the best nett score over 36 holes was Sue Would with 77+74=151. In second place Sue Archer 77+76=153 and third Aileen Sellars 76+83=159.
Other prize winners were; Barbara Chard best gross am, Ann Todd ( Lady Captain ) best gross pm, Jenny Holborn best nett am and Hefina Brumpton best nett pm.
Also on Wednesday July 23, 17 ladies entered the Starbuck Trophy Competition, this was won for the second year running by Margaret Dixon with a nett score of 78. In second place was Chris Bean and third went to Rosemarie Proudlove. The best gross silver score was returned by Pauline Neal 98 and the best gross bronze score was recorded by Margaret Rylatt 107.
The EWGA medal was won by Linda Reeve nett 77, second Chris Bean, third Di Warburton. Best gross score silver division Rebecca Ross.
