MARKET Rasen Town Cricket Club took the next step towards promotion this week, as they announced the appointment of Matthew Rutherford as 1st XI Captain.
The Lincolnshire Minor Counties player returned to the club’s 1st XI at the start of the season, after a decade away from the club’s Saturday teams, playing for Owmby and Lindum in the ECB Premier League.
With Rutherford settled in and keen to contribute as much as possible on the field, the club have made the appointment, with the blessing of the outgoing leadership team of Simon Bunn and Gary Bierlein.
The Bunn–Bierlein Axis saw Rasen lose only two games in the last season and a half and included an undefeated promotion campaign from Division Two last season.
Simon Bunn will continue as 1st XI manager and both Bunn and Gary Bierlein will continue to be vital members of the 1st XI squad.
The club would like to thank both Simon and Gary for all of their hard work over the last four years and look forward to both of them helping the 1st XI reap the benefits of their graft in the seasons to come.
Rutherford takes on the 1st XI captaincy knowing that the club has never been in a stronger position during the last decade.
With an excellent blend of youth and experience to work with, the all-rounder expects to be able to guide Rasen into the Lincolnshire Premier League and even beyond over the next few years.
Matthew will take over the reins for the first time at Horncastle on Saturday, but Rase Park regulars will have to wait until July 21 before he will get to captain the side at home.
