THE weather continues to dictate terms to Market Rasen Town Cricket Club’s 1st XI, with the downpours of last week putting paid to any hopes the side had of taking the field in the Lincolnshire League last Saturday.
In spite of having only been able to play one league game, the 1sts are still handily placed in Division One, being only six points off a promotion spot with a game in hand on the top two.
The Sunday 2nd XI were the only other Rasen side scheduled to play at the weekend and they headed to Hykeham looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
Unfortunately the young side were unable to make it three wins in a row, losing by eight runs.
Hykeham 2nds batted first on a wicket that looked likely to offer plenty of assistance to the bowlers and Rasen’s attack tore into an uncertain Hykeham batting line-up.
Gavin Korytnickyj led the way for the visitors, bagging three wickets and the rest of the attack supported the spinning all-rounder well, with the seam trio of Paul Bett, Simon Bunn and Sam Williams sharing five wickets between them and Gary Bierlein chipping in as well to dismiss Hykeham for 64.
Bunn, 13, and Korytnickyj, 21, opened for Rasen and looked to have set the youngsters on their way with an enterprising start.
Unfortunately a callow batting performance from the rest of the side, combined with an excellent bowling performance from Rob Buckley and a rapidly deteriorating wicket, led to Rasen being bundled out for 56, to hand Hykeham an unlikely eight run victory.
Buckley finished with the impressive figures of 7 for 4 and proved the match-winner.
This weekend sees a full slate of fixtures – weather permitting. On Saturday Rasen’s Lincolnshire League sides look to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. The 1sts host Outcasts 1sts and the 2nds are at Old Lincolnians, both 1.30pm starts.
In the Lincoln League, the Sunday 1st XI host Hykeham 1sts and the Sunday 2nd XI head to Rustons, both 2pm starts.
