Market Rasen Town 2 Ivy Tavern 1
MARKET Rasen Town FC took the field for their game with Ivy Tavern with a weakened team due to injury and availability.
Despite milder conditions, the pitch was bumpy and bare of grass after the winter, while a blustery wind looked likely to play tricks.
James Brothwell and Jake Wade were absent from the Rasen back four due to injury, Andrew Norburn and Aaran Greenbeck replacing them in the back. Ian Williams and Adam Brumpton were absent up front from the previous week's team.
Rasen faced the wind in the first half and started the brighter of the two sides in what was to prove a scrappy encounter. There were few chances at either end in the first half and half time arrived without either keeper being seriously troubled and the scoreline consequently blank.
Rasen pushed forward a little more in the second half with Matt Rutherford, who was in superb form, and Andrew Brumpton controlling midfield. It was man of the match Rutherford who put Market Rasen ahead with a fierce volley from 25 yards that flew into the net past a surprised Ivy keeper who had no chance of getting across to save.
Ivy got back on terms fairly quickly with a scrappy goal, the ball somehow finding its way through a crowded goalmouth, but Rasen gritted their teeth and snatched the winner through Joe Osborne.
The tricky wide man picked up the ball just inside the Ivy half and dinked his way past a couple of defenders before netting. Rasen just about deserved their victory and will hope to be on top of their game this Saturday when they host Metheringham in the Richardson Trophy at Rase Park with a 1-45 kick off.
* Market Rasen Social Club FC were at home against AFC Harpars from Horncastle on Sunday in the Lincoln Sunday League. Social Club took an early lead when Kyle Paul netted with a right footer in the bottom corner. An Adam Baxter free kick then crashed against the bar but there was no further addition to the scoreline until half time. Social Club scored a second when an Andrew Brumpton free kick was saved by the keeper and Stuart Butler followed up to net the rebound. Harpars scored a late consolation to leave Social Club winners at 2-1.
This Sunday they play a semi final of the Mitchell Cup against Newtown Utd, the winners going through to the final at Lincoln City's ground at Sincell Bank.
