Market Rasen jockey Duran Fentiman went under starters orders and backed a winner at St Mary’s Priory Church Old Malton, marrying his partner of five years Kirby Harris.

The wedding was attended by many of the jockey’s weighing room colleagues. The reception was at The Old Lodge Malton and best man was the jockey’s former valet Martin Tootell.

The wedding capped a great 2013 for the former De Aston student, who rode 36 winners in the calendar year, mainly in the summer turf season. The jockey had no doubts though as to what was his big day of the year-his wedding day.

Fentiman has postponed his honeymoon until February with bookings for rides continuing on the all weather tracks at Wolverhampton and Southall.

Duran and Kirby, with their five-year old-son Warren, found time to visit family in Market Rasen over the festive period and enjoyed a busman’s day out at Market Rasen races on Boxing Day trying to pick the winners like the other 8,000 punters. As a flat race specialist the jockey has no intention of riding over the sticks at his local course.

He has become one of the most respected jockeys on the northern tracks riding for top trainer Tim Easterby.

The jockey is already looking forward to the 2014 turf season and hopes for some big race rides.

He said: “One disappointment last year was missing out on a ride at Redcar on star sprinter ‘Ventura Mist.’

“She won the big sprint there while I had a ban. I had used the whip a bit too much in a finish when I rode at Ayr the week before so I could not ride her.”

That disappointment is well in the past though and 2014 could not have started better as Fentiman had his first winner on Burren View Lady at Wolverhampton, just two days into 2014.
