The eight-year-old from Chapman’s Woodlands Stables won by half-a-length at Cartmell.

Chapman was advised to book northern jockey Brian Harding for the 2m 3 furlong chase.

“I was told by a racing friend and statistician,” he said.

“It’s a tight track and you have got to know it. Brian kept him on the rails just behind the leaders. He did brilliantly.

“He won on the flat for me and he was well placed at Cartmel a year ago in a decent novices race.

“We shall give him a break now and see how he is in a month or two.”

Volcanic Jack is owned by Alan Mann for whom Chapman has been training horses for 20 years.

He also owns The Society Man, another from the Woodlands yard who has been consistently in the frame in recent years.

As a director of Grimsby Town, Chapman has also been celebrating promotion and a return to the Football League.
