HOCKEY: Brigg lose opening game to Boston Spa

Boston Spa 4–2 Brigg

BRIGG Hockey Club Men’s 1st team visited Boston Spa for their first Yorkshire Premier League game of the season and went down 4-2. Boston Spa started the game at a high tempo and quickly showed their game plan was to take route one.

Brigg managed to counter attack at a pace Spa couldn’t handle and quickly won two penalty corners.

However Brigg couldn’t capitalise on these early chances and were made to pay when Boston sneaked a goal through some weak play in Brigg’s midfield.

The goal set Brigg’s tempo for the rest of the match as the midfield trio were caught on the ball far too often.

A few chances came Brigg’s way, but it took a sharp strike from Danny Clay to get Brigg back in the game.

With the half–time break came a stern telling off from coach Steve Ward, and it seemed to do the trick. Brigg dominated the second–half but still somehow found themselves 3–1 down.

Clay showed his eye for a goal once more to reduce the home lead and make for a tight finish. But Joe Hastings was sent off for dissent and in the end Brigg could not complain about a 4–2 defeat. Man of the match was handed to Clay for his two sharp finishes.
