HOCKEY: Brigg continue promotion push without a ball being hit

Brigg Hockey Club Mens 1st team were unable to get their promotion push on the move again when their Yorkshire Premier League game with York University was cancelled at the last minute when the students mini bus had a flat tyre and was grounded in York.

Brigg have been awarded the game 3-0 under league rules, but to win by default was disappointing when their recent form has been so good.

Brigg Hockey Club Mens 2nd Xl made the long journey to Scarborough just before the bad weather set in, but went down 3-1. Brigg came up against one of the stronger teams in their league. Missing some key players from midfield, the 2nds reshuffled.

The game ebbed and flowed for the first 20 minutes with neither side able to dominate. Scarborough were unlucky to lose one of their strikers early on with a split finger. However it was the home side that took the lead from a short corner played wide from the injection for a straight strike into the goal.

Brigg bounced back and were unlucky not to equalise when, after dispossessing the opposition midfield, the ball fell to David Baggott, who passed to Zach Meadows, who slotted the ball past the keeper to Andrew Norris, who somehow missed the simplest of chances with an open goal in front of him.

To add to the disappointment, Scarborough went further ahead almost immediately with a lucky goal, the winger crossing speculatively and the ball brushing off Rob Ashmore’s pads for an own goal.

Brigg rallied in the second half and a brilliant individual effort from David Baggott, in which he beat three players before a shot into the roof of the net, gave the visitors some hope.

The game really was a tale of two defences, with few chances for either side as time ran out. Scarborough scored a third goal late on as Brigg looked to press for an equaliser.
