Brigg take the points in tense relegation battle

THREE points from Saturday’s game at relegation rivals Thirsk saw Brigg Mens Hockey Club 2nd team ease their fears of relegation from Yorkshire League Division 2.

A late start at the northern team in the league did not deter Brigg as they looked to build on their success of a win from the previous week.

Brigg started well again, a marked contrast to earlier in the season where games were being lost within the first 20 minutes, and opened the scoring through the prolific Simon Weightman with a well worked move.

When the ball was switched from the right hand side of the pitch over to Stuart Brumby he struck the ball hard into the ‘D’ for Weightman to deflect into the goal.

Weightman then hit the post rather than taking his second goal after a pass from Andrew Norris removed the Thirsk keeper from the equation.

Thirsk then equalised just before half-time when they mimicked the Brigg goal with a similarly hard struck ball into the ‘D,’ which was deflected past Phil Young to level the score.

An upbeat half-time talk saw Brigg come out fired up and some persistence and hard work from Zack Meadows on the left flank was rewarded when he converted a penalty corner move to take Brigg back into the lead at 2-1.

Brigg’s third goal came from a brilliant piece of individual skill from Andrew Norris, who beat three defenders and fed the ball back to Weightman for his second.

Brigg were perhaps guilty of failing to close the game out and kept pushing to increase the lead, which gave Thirsk the opportunity to counter attack.

Their swift centre forward caused a number of problems and eventually struck to bring Thirsk back into the game and cause Brigg a nervous last ten minutes.

As the whistle for full time was blown these nerves were proven unfounded and Brigg took another three points towards safety.
