Brigg Hockey Club Mens 1st team enjoyed a 7-0 romp at home to Sheffield University Bankers.
The result keeps them at the top of the Yorkshire Premier League.
Brigg went into the game determined to improve on the previous week’s performance at Bradford.
Sheffield from the start were careful and structured in their approach, but Brigg dominated possession, pressing the away team back into their own half. Forward runs by Andy Morris and Sam Crookes provided chances to score, but agile keeping from the Sheffield custodian denied Brigg on several occasions, and shots from Andrew Dixon also flashed past the far post.
With frustration rising, and a rotation of players from the side-line, the pace of Brigg was maintained and a determined run from Joe Hastings penetrated the Sheffield circle winning a short corner.
The resulting corner and scramble was pounced on by Joe Coburn, who slotted the ball over the line.
The pressure lifted and developed into a period of calm passing that eventually presented Brigg with another opportunity, again from a short corner, dispatched by Coburn.
After the half time break, Brigg started to dominate moving forward through Tom North and Simon Dixon with strong forward runs from the midfield.
Hesitation in the Sheffield defence saw Hastings snatch the ball on the Sheffield 25 yard line, feed Andy Morris, who sent a first time shot into the corner of the goal.
It was clear that Brigg were growing in confidence and dominant runs from Andrew Dixon saw him steer a pass into Sam Crookes, who coolly dragged the ball back to his right and lifted the ball over the advancing keepers’ foot to finish in the bottom right corner.
It was just reward for a young player who has advanced his hockey this season.
Further pressure was applied down the right by Coburn, Crookes and Ollie Reid, who after several neat passes, fed Morris who tucked the ball calmly into the net to make the score 5 – 0
A flowing move then led to Joe Coburn completing his hat-trick after being set up by Andy Morris.
Finally, to finish the scoring, an authoritative flick was lifted into the roof of the net by the impressive Andy Reid.
Brigg 2nd lost 1-0 to Wakefield 3rd; Brigg 3rd won at Wakefield 5th, while the 4th team beat Sheffield University Bankers 7-2 at The Pods.
