Over 50s on course for cup success at Market Rasen

It was the turn for Market Rasen Golf Club’s older players to shine at the weekend when 58 took part in the qualifier for the Ellmore Cup for players aged over 50.

The format was a medal round with the top eight going forward to a match play knockout for the trophy.

The course was in good condition, though the recent weather made the greens a bit slower than is normal at this time of the year.

One player who made a mockery of the conditions was Colin Law (13 handicap) who carded a staggering 75 gross to head the qualifiers with a marvellous 62 nett. He will now be playing the knockout stages off 11 handicap.

Another player to receive a handicap change was Steve Forbes (14) who’s nett 67 led to a one shot reduction.

Three players, Hatril Dhinsa, John Boulton and Dave King, finished on 71 and the final three qualifiers, Brian Allison, Mike Beddoes and Colin Croft finished on 73.

Special mention must go to Brian Allison (18) who proved you can always recover from a bad start. He found bunker trouble on the first to finish with a score of 10 after one hole, but still managed to finish in the top eight.

The club A team have not made the best of starts, losing 3–0 to Blankney in the Elsham foursomes in atrocious conditions and then going down 5–1 away to Forest Pines in the A League.
