Brigg Town FC were well beaten 3-0 by a strong Stamford team in their away fixture, so halting their recent climb up the EvoStik League Division One South table.
Ex-Stamford striker Bruno Holden and Liam Dickens both returned to the starting line up with Josh Davies and Paul Ashton on the subs’ bench.
Brigg started brightly enough, but Paul Grimes and Liam Davis were both well marked and continuously fouled in possession.
Scott Hellewell went close to opening the score, but headed a free kick from Ryan Paczkowski over the bar.
Ryan Paczkowski was then the first player to be cautioned for a strong challenge whilst from another free kick, Liam Davis toe poked a shot past the Stamford post.
Brigg’s best move saw Bruno Holden and Paul Grimes working the ball for Liam Davis to send a snap shot over the bar from fifteen yards out.
The home team took the lead after 23 minutes of play, when the ball was worked down the left wing before being pulled back for an easy tap in.
The second half began with Stamford fouls on Liam Davis, and when Brigg got forward Greg Archer headed Ryan Paczkowski’s free kick wide.
Further players’ names were added to the referee’s growing list before Ryan Paczkowski was sent off for his second caution.
This put the Brigg defenders under more pressure and the home team were then awarded a hotly disputed penalty kick after 70 minutes for a challenge inside the area by Chas Fisher.
Miles Fenty got his fingertips to the spot kick, but the ball flew into the back of the net.
The home team were in control and added a third goal two minutes from time with a lovely shot inside Miles Fenty’s goal post.
This Saturday, Brigg travel again to play another team chasing promotion when they take on Sutton Coldfield.
