Newcastle Town 2
Brigg Town 1.
BRIGG FC travelled to Staffordshire for their league game against Newcastle Town and included new signing John Wilkinson in their line up.
They were without Alan Lamb and Alex Flett, but Michael Smith returned.
On a decent playing surface, the home team were first to create scoring chances, but strikes from inside the penalty area were well saved by Brigg keeper Tom Woodhead.
Brigg took the lead after ten minutes of play from a free kick on the edge of the Newcastle area.
John Wilkinson was tripped and the free kick was tapped sideways by Phil Jackman for Charlie Weir to drive the ball past the defensive wall into the bottom of the net.
The home team responded from the re-start by winning a corner kick on the left.
This was cleared to the other end of the pitch for Brigg to apply more pressure, winning two successive corner kicks, but these came to nothing.
When Newcastle were awarded a free kick 20–yards from goal the ball flew wide of the upright.
Brigg continued to look comfortable with their lead up to half time and further chances were created for Phil Jackman and Charlie Weir to go close to extending the lead.
Brigg continued to play well for the first 20 minutes of the second half and had the ball in the net again from a left wing corner kick, but a free kick for a foul on the goalkeeper was awarded.
The home team then levelled the score after 70 minutes. This was a bitter blow and made worse ten minutes later when the home team attacked down the right wing and the ball was crossed into the penalty area for a shot at goal, straight through defending legs and into the back of the net for the winner.
Brigg pushed for an equaliser but the nearest they came was from a header by Liam Davis just over the cross bar in the closing minutes.
Brigg now have a home league match on Saturday afternoon against Rainworth M.W.
