Caistor Tennyson 2-0 Mablethorpe
Atrocious conditions greeted Caistor Tennyson when they entertained Mablethorpe in their scheduled East Lincolnshire Combination Division 2 match.
Caistor kicked off with the wind at their backs and set about establishing as big a lead as they could against the seaside outfit in the first half.
They wanted to put the game to bed by half time but Mablethorpe were to offer stubborn resistance.
Early pressure though eventually told and it was a long throw by Rick Day that was flicked on by Kieron Togher and somehow deceived the Mablethorpe ‘keeper, who was all at sea as the ball floated over him and found its way into the back of the net.
Soon after, an excellent cross by man of the match Ali Stopper was met by veteran striker Paul Lockington whose trademark powerful header sailed over the ‘keeper to find the net.
At 2-0 after 15 minutes the odds were on a big win for the home outfit. However, not for the first time this season, ruthlessness to kill off the opposition was not part of their armoury.
Chances were created, some of them on the back of the tail wind, but were not taken, or they produced a fine safe from the Mablethorpe keeper.
At half time no further goals had been added and Caistor knew they would have to defend strongly with the wind in their faces for the second half.
Ben Togher made an excellent save soon after the break and the entire back line worked hard to keep the Tennyson goal intact with Togher between the sticks keen to claim another clean sheet.
Tennyson were still able to mount the occasional counter attack and when they did the speed of Stoppper was often evident.
The second half produced no goals and so the 2-0 final margin reflected a game in which both sides deserved credit for overcoming the atrocious conditions.
The win kept Tennyson at the top of the table with every chance of a second successive promotion.
