Easy Cup win for Rasen

THE RED and Greens took a break from league action this week and travelled to take on Sleaford in The Lincolnshire Cup.

Sleaford 1st XV 8

Market Rasen & Louth 1st XV 51

The opposition had already been vanquished twice this season in the league matches by comfortable margins and inevitably Rasen arrived expecting another easy victory.

Within two minutes Rasen pressure forced Sleaford into a hurried clearance kick that was fielded by flanker Dave Starling and two passes later the ball was in the hands of flying winger Peter Everton marking his return to action with his first try of the game easily outpacing the home defence.

This early dominance was followed five minutes later as another sweeping Rasen attack resulted in centre James Bemrose crossing the line with his midfield partner Paul Cook adding the conversion. However the visitors then lost their focus and, after a sequence of drives, Sleaford worked an overlap and were back in the game with a try in the corner.

Slowly Rasen regained composure and began to establish control with flanker Ben Chamberlin going over close to the touchline after a switch of play had left the home defence flatfooted. Good work by Starling resulted in another turnover and after some neat interplay from the forwards; Everton got his second touch of the ball to round the defence for another score. Sleaford got three points from a penalty and a glimmer of hope as the half closed with Rasen 22 – 8 in front.

The start of the second period mirrored the first with an early Rasen strike as Cook made a long mazy run leaving Sleaford defenders in his wake before feeding winger Adam Dearden to score in the corner.

Almost immediately from the restart, Cook launched a long kick and good follow up work resulted in the Sleaford defender being caught in possession. The poor defender bereft of any support had the ball stolen and moments later Everton was over the line again to complete his hat trick and break whatever spirit Sleaford had left.

After a quick tap penalty Bemrose delivered the perfect pass for Everton to add to his tally with a fourth try. The forwards were completely dominating their counterparts and Chamberlin crashed over for his second score with Cook adding the extra points. A further try from Will Thornes, deputising for absent skipper Dean Hutchinson at number eight, completed the scoring.

Team: Cole, Matts, Wootton, Dearden L, Mitchell, Chamberlin, Starling, Thornes, Neesham A, Dearden A, Cook, Bemrose, Everton, Neesham M. Subs (all used): Barnard, Green, Greetham, Houghton
