Disappointing weekend for Brigg Hockey
IN A busy weekend Brigg Hockey Club 1st team could only manage one point from a possible six from two away games.
They did however turn in two good performances, despite going down 5-2 at Ilkley on Saturday against Ben Rhydding and drawing 3-3 at Sheffield University Bakers on Sunday.
The home side scored the opener at Ben Rhydding. The umpires failed to spot a foot on the 23 metre line and the Brigg defence was caught out expecting a whistle.
Andrew Reid soon got Brigg back on terms, turning quickly in the circle and netting confidently in trademark style. The move had built up down the right and when the cross came over it fell inch perfect for Reid. The leading scorer is bang on form at the moment after a lean patch early in the season.
Ben Rhydding regained the lead when a mishit shot that looked to be going wide deceived Brigg keeper Tom Jackson, who managed to deflect the ball into his own net.
One goal behind at half time, Brigg then played some of their best hockey, camping in the home side's half, but failed to put their chances away. Two open play goals and one from a short corner to the home side completed the scoring to give a very flattering look to the score in the home side's favour. Brigg notched a late consolation from Andrew Morris, but Brigg were left rueing their missed chances.
At Sheffield on Sunday Brigg at least got some reward. The home club always play good passing hockey and with Brigg matching them a lively game of open hockey ensued.
Brigg were two goals up after 15 minutes, Reid notching both. The second goal was the result of some excellent passing involving Joe Hastings and Harry Cadwallader. In the second half Brigg lost their way a little and gave the ball away easily. The home side first equalised, and then a stray pass from Brigg skipper Andy Burnett was picked up and Sheffield took the lead. A late David Baggott penalty stroke conversion after feet on the line, secured a deserved point for Brigg.
* Brigg 2nds lost 3-0 to Hull University and the 3rd team lost 4-1 to Driffield 2nds. The 4th team however had a 5-1 win at Sheffield University Bankers 8th team.
