Major changes planned by county league

Promotion and relegation issues between the Lincolnshire Cricket League and The Readers Lincolnshire ECB Premier League will leave local teams unaffected by recent decisions of the two leagues in the short term, but in the longer term local clubs could be affected by planned major changes.

Lincolnshire County League winners Scunthorpe Town will not be promoted to the ECB League, after there were doubts as to whether their pitch and outfield would be up to ECB League standard for 2013.

Bob Welton, Lincolnshire County League Chairman, told the Mail that to accommodate Scunthorpe and allow two Lincolnshire County League Division 1 teams to be promoted, the Premier Division will operate with 11 teams in the 2013 season instead of the usual ten,

Market Rasen, who finished second in that league, will therefore start the next campaign in the Premier Division, joining local rivals Caistor.

Market Rasen will clearly be looking to build on their promotion success of the past two seasons.

and be among those challenging for ECB status for 2014.

League Secretary Ann Boulton has confirmed the ECB league have plans to form a second tier for 2014, made up of clubs presently in the Lincolnshire County League and the South Lincs and Boarder League.

The clubs in that though will need to meet ECB guidelines on facilities and grounds, and an additional factor will be whether some of those clubs will be keen to join a county league that could stretch from Barton to Stamford, a distance of 80 miles.

Messingham are one club who have won the Lincolnshire County League in recent seasons but declined promotion because of the travelling distance to South Lincolnshire.

Haxey, from the Isle of Axholme, however, who won the 21011 Lincolnshire County League title in 2011, won the Readers title in 2012, showing clearly that distance can be no problem, but also that the teams at the top of the county league play to a good standard.

Market Rasen, on the back of recent success, will be hoping to emulate them.
