CRICKET: Unbeaten stand of 192 sees Lincolnshire ease past Shropshire

Lincolnshire County Cricket squad entertained Shropshire in their third Knockout Competition match of the season at Bracebridge Heath knowing that victory was crucial to their hopes of progressing to the quarter final stage.

Shropshire won the toss and elected to bat first. Immediately Lincolnshire captain David Lucas struck removing opener Lockley for a duck.

Debutant Alex Willerton removed Evans, also for a duck, and Lucas struck again shortly afterwards as the visitors fell to 31 for 3.

Shropshire’s best stand then followed as James Ralph (50) and Robbie Clarke (56) added 79 for the fourth wicket. The visitors progressed steadily to 201 for 5 with Simon Gregory making 33 and Gurman Randhawa 31 before David Lucas returned to the attack to finish with 6 for 49 as Shropshire collapsed to 221 all out in their final over, losing their last five wickets for 20 runs.

Lincolnshire’s innings started in similar fashion to that of the visitors as they also slumped to 31 for 3, with Anish Patel, Karanjit Bansal and Paul Cook all falling for single figure scores.

It was at this point that the game changed dramatically as Carl Wilson joined Sam Kelsall. They treated the crowd to a fine exhibition of attacking cricket adding an unbeaten 192 for the fourth wicket to take Lincolnshire to victory with over 11 overs to spare.

Kelsall was 100 not out off 104 balls, hitting two sixes and 14 fours and Wilson was 106 not out from 85 balls, hitting two sixes (both in the final over) and 18 fours.

This victory means that Lincolnshire will qualify for the quarter final stages if they beat Cumberland at Cockermouth on Sunday, May 17. They could also qualify if that game was abandoned and Cheshire failed to beat Northumberland.
