As the great British summer continues to deluge the nation, a blank Saturday in the fixture calendar couldn’t have come at a better time for Market Rasen Town Cricket Club.
Unfortunately, the inclement weather also put paid to any chance of cricket at Rase Park on Sunday, meaning the Sunday 2nd XI and the U13s both lost out on the opportunity for more league points, with their games against Washingborough and Scunthorpe Town respectively both being cancelled.
The Sunday 1st XI headed for Bracebridge Heath in expectation of another abandonment, but were pleasantly surprised to find a brisk breeze had kept the Peacocks’ ground relatively dry and was also moving on what rain clouds there were.
Bowling first, Rasen made good use of a helpful deck to limit the hosts to 138 for 9 from their 40 overs, thanks to an excellent all-round display with the ball, backed up by some keen fielding.
Rasen’s chase was anchored by an elegant 39 from Dave Papworth, with the correct opener’s effort allowing his younger colleagues to crack on.
George Fussey, Will Bradford and Seb Darke did just that, with all three contributing telling cameos, before Matt Rutherford came in to deliver the coup de grace by smashing the ball down the ground for the win.
An indifferent start to the season in the Lincoln League means the Sunday 1st XI are still only 19 points above the relegation zone.
However, with Morton visiting this weekend, the side will be expecting to string together back-to-back wins for the first time this season to get themselves further up the table.
This weekend sees Rasen going ‘Viking’ for the second time this season on Saturday, with the 1st XI at Barton Town in the Lincs League Premier Division, 1pm start, and the 2nd XI hosting Barton Town 2nd XI in Division Three, 1.30pm start.
On Sunday, Morton visit Rase Park in the Premier Division of the Lincoln League and the Sunday 2nd XI head to Rustons; both 2pm starts.
