MOST of our local sides were engaged in the opening rounds of the George Marshall and Bob Welton cup competitions at the weekend.
In the George Marshall, Caistor, of the Premier Division, won comfortably against Horncastle of Division 1 in the Wolds derby, Caistor’s top scorer being Sri Lankan Sahan Wijerathne with 52.
Caistor Town hit 256 for nine while Horncastle collapsed for a meagre 87.
In the Caistor total there were also very positive contributions with the bat from Peter Briggs with 22, Tom Boryszczuk 46, Harry Boulton 27, Jim Parker 38 and Paul Dimbleby with 36, while Dimbleby and Dominic Bishop each claimed three wickets.
There was a fine win for Keelby at home to Haxey 2nds with half-centuries from Danny Bevis and Gary Spencer. Owmby of Division 2 cruised through to round two at Todmoor where Division 4 Hykeham were the visitors.
In an all Premier clash at the former Nettleton Mines ground, South Kelsey lost by three-wickets to Messingham in a low-scoring tie.
In the Bob Welton Cup, South Kelsey 2nds were soundly beaten away to Barton Town 2nds, while Caistor 2nds posted a good score of 210, but still lost to Scunthorpe Town 2nds.
Scores were: George Marshall Cup: Hibaldstow 133 (J Taylor 60, T Taylor 58 not out) lost to Market Rasen 137 for three (Williams 87 not out) by seven wickets.
Haxey 2nds 154 (Young 78) lost to Keelby 155 for one (D Bevis 76, Spencer 60 not out) by nine wickets.
Owmby 183 for nine beat Hykeham 66 by 117 runs.
South Kelsey 92 (A Langford 5-16) lost to Messingham 93 for seven by three wickets.
Bob Welton Cup: Barton Town 2nds 258 for four (Sanderson 66, Wilkinson 63 not out, Barnes 50) beat South Kelsey 2nds 111, by 147 runs.
Caistor Town 2nds 210 for four lost to Scunthorpe Town 2nds, 213 for six, by four wickets.
